FOR ALL YOU PPL WHO HAVE HEARD OF MY PROBLEM THAT THE HL GAME TELLS ME MY MAP DIFFERS THAN THE SERVERS.....IN DM AND TFC TOO CHECK OUT WHAT SIERRA TOLD ME TO DO......
Hello, thank you for contacting Sierra tech support
This is most likely caused by a corrupt install of the product (or one of
the mods). Try doing a clean install with the following instructions. Try
not installing any mods to see if it works. If it works after the clean
install, then try the mods one at a time.
Half-Life requires that you have 400 MB free on your destination
installation drive before installing the game. It is also recommended that
you run Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter on all hard drives before installing.
If you have previously installed the game uninstall it by running Sierra
Utilities and choosing Uninstall. Then restart your computer in MSDOS mode
and type:
CD\WINDOWS\TEMP (and press the ENTER key)
DEL *.* (and press ENTER)
(say yes to delete all files)
CD\SIERRA (and press ENTER)
DELTREE HALF-L~1 (and press ENTER)
(say yes to delete the directory and all its contents)
EXIT (and press ENTER to restart Windows)
Then make a system disk. A system disk will solve many errors by
eliminating conflicts and making more memory available to the program.
System disks are also an important step in troubleshooting errors. To
create a system disk for Windows '95 place a blank high-density diskette in
your A: drive. Open the My Computer icon from the desktop and highlight the
icon for Drive A:. Right-click on the icon and choose Format. In the
resulting dialog box, check "Full" under Format Type and "Copy System Files"
under Other Options. Click on OK to start the process.
Once the disk is formatted and while still in My Computer, double-click on
the icon for the C: drive. Look for the file called MSDOS.SYS in the list
of files. If you cannot find it, click on the View menu, choose Options and
then the View tab. Make sure "Show all files" is checked and "Hide MS DOS
file extensions" is NOT checked. Once you've found the MSDOS.SYS file,
right-click on it and choose Send To 3 ½ Floppy (A). You will be prompted
to replace an existing file - click on OK.
Boot up with your system disk at this point by going to the Start menu and
choosing Shutdown and Restart the Computer with the disk in your A: drive.
If your computer has Windows '95 drivers for all of your hardware, the
system disk will load all your hardware drivers. If not you will need to
load your DOS mode drivers. Our Windows System Disk troubleshooting
document contains detailed instructions for creating Windows '95 system
disks without DOS mode drivers loading.
Also make sure there are no other programs running in Windows '95. To make
sure there are no other programs running:
Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key. This will bring up a
Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running
programs.
The only programs we want listed in the task list are the Explorer and
Systray (if you have it). If there are other programs in the task list
highlight one of them and click on the End Task button.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the only programs listed in the Close Program Box
are the Explorer and Systray. NOTE: some programs cannot be shut down
using these steps. You will need to shut down those programs according to
the instructions specific to those programs.
Once the Explorer and Systray are the only programs in the Close Program Box
start the install for Half-Life.
If problems persist this may be due to files being mis-read or corrupted
during transfer from the CD to the hard drive. This can be caused by
several problems that effect the ability of the CD-ROM drive to read the
application CD.
First, check the CD for fingerprints, dust, scratches or any obvious flaws.
If necessary, clean the CD with a soft non-abrasive cloth, wiping from the
center ring toward the outer edge.
Next, make sure that your CD-ROM drive is using 32-bit protected mode
drivers, not 16-bit legacy drivers from DOS or Windows 3.1. 16-bit drivers
will not be able to stream large amounts of data in Windows '95 or '98
without faltering. To determine whether your set-up is optimal, hold down
the ALT key and double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon. A System Properties
window will pop-up. Click on the PERFORMANCE tab. Under Performance status
it should say, "Your system is configured for optimal performance." If not,
you may be using outdated drivers that will undermine the performance of
your system.
If you are using real-mode drivers you may be able to use Windows '95 or
'98's add hardware feature to install the correct driver. Click on Start,
then Settings and Control Panel. Go to Add New Hardware and let Windows
detect the hardware. It may ask for the Windows '95 or '98 CD-ROM to load
the correct drivers. If Windows '95 or '98 is not able to detect your
CD-ROM, you should contact your system manufacturer and have them walk you
through the process of installing protected mode drivers. The general
performance of your entire system will be improved.
If the system is optimally configured, make sure that the CD-ROM cache is
set-up correctly. Click on the File System button, and then the CD-ROM tab.
There are two settings here. The "Optimize access pattern for:" should
reflect the speed of your CD-ROM, typically, Quad-speed or higher on current
systems. The "Supplemental cache size:" will usually work best if set to
Small. If the cache is not optimal you may have read errors,
skipping/looping sound or static.
Also, there is a setting that can cause various read errors/locks when
accessing a CD. To shut off this feature go to Start, then Settings and
click on Control Panel. Locate the System Icon and double-click on it.
When the System Properties window comes up click on the tab labeled Device
Manager and locate the listing for CD-ROM. Click the plus (+) next to the
listing and then double-click the listing that appears below CD-ROM. On
this window click the Settings tab and locate a listing for DMA under the
Options section. You will want to uncheck the box next to DMA and then
click Okay. Then click Close on System properties and choose Yes to
Restarting the System.
Then go ahead and follow the steps from earlier for booting up with a system
disk and closing background programs and reinstall the program.
Next make sure you are updated to the most recent patch. To download the
update for Half-Life, go to:
http://www.sierra.com/support/technical/updates/main.html
Then select Half-Life from the drop down menu labeled "Choose your product
and go." There are a few different patches listed. To check which version
of Half-Life you have, open your SIERRA\HALF-LIFE directory. Right-click
once on the HL.EXE file and choose Properties. Click the Version tab. The
first thing listed will be File Version which will be 1,0,0,x. This is your
current version of Half-Life. Download the version that takes you from your
current version to the latest version of Half-Life. Then double-click the
file that downloads and the update will install itself.
If you have any further questions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to
reply and keep the body of the message in the reply.
