View Full Version : How the heck did you come up with your name??
Ok - always an interesting point of discussion, how long ago and how did you get your screen name. How many different screen names do you go by?
I started playing team fortress like 6 -7? years ago with Hick, Lead, Geg, Subby. I actually had a name of like "the Conqueror" - So I just changed it and typed in 3 random letters. ta dah! Come to find out Lud was a king in Europe that made decorations of his dead enemies by nailing them around his castle.... Yes yes - I think he prolly married his sister, sang Gaelic tunes while wearing a prom dress or something too.

My first handle was started many-a-year ago when cheeseboy (then named "matt" or "salted one"), me, and a few other guys were playing the brand new "Duke Nukem 3D" and when it was my turn to play he said "ok it's Obb's turn".. from that typo came "Obbinator", "Obbler", "Obb 0wnz j00", and finally "The h4x0r f0rm4llY known as Obb that is now known as Slughead and if you are reading this you are gay"
I came up with the name "Slughead" about 6 years ago when I was watching the movie "Jame's bond - Golden Eye" in theater..
The Russian hacker "Boris" was "hax0ring" into the Pentagon's "gib50n" and they were doing a trace er some crap and he ran a script that "fux0r3d th3iR sh1z1t3" and then he said
"Better luck next time slughead's!"
I don't remember the exact thought process by which that became my handle but it did later that night and I've been using it ever since... kinda wanna change it too, any thoughts?

so uh yeah, I'll see you in the game heh,

I've always liked reading threads like this... http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif
My first true internet experience (AOL doesn't count) began on EFNet IRC about 7 years ago. Man was I addicted to that! Since I've always liked my initials, JAZ, I've never fell out of pattern from keeping my main nicknames away from those three letters. My very first IRC nickname was simply JAZZ, then, as I became more "31337", it morphed into [-JaZZ-], then, at the peak of my 31337ness, I became JaZz0r. Since then, I've a few failed attempts at changing it to something out of the "JAZ" pattern, so I've kept my, shall we say, super-31337 nickname. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif

Well...I got my screen name about a year ago or two years ago...I forget. Anyway, I used to go by the name of Sniper or Silent-Sniper. But, those names were dull and overused. I then started to watch the greatest show on earth called South Park. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif I got the name Hanky from the little piece of crap that comes out of the toilet every christmas. Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo. It's sweeeeeeeeeeeet! http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif<br clear=all>

12-01-2000, 11:25 AM
Well, I've always used names from kick ass movies and/or bands that I like. Back when I started playing Counter-Strike I was CANNIBAL_CORPSE, then I changed it to Siris which I didnt like too much and I finally ended up using Hannibal_Lecter cause I liked the movie and I think that name sounds very cool. I have also used the name Lestat on Quake III. Yep, I love those movie/book names.

Gegner
12-01-2000, 11:54 AM
As Lud said, I've had Gegner so long that I hardly remember getting it.... not really... I started with Q1 and Team Fortress and was playing with my initials (MDC), but decided that was really lame, so I studied a bunch of different names without much success...
I needed a name that had origionality. I speak German, so I looked at that avenue. Gegner is german for enemy or advesary and it just fit.. easy for MOST ppl to type and shortens nicely to Geg. It's a keeper.
My wife still gives me a strange look when someone calls the house looking for Gegner... hee hee.
Slughead... just reverse it... Head_Slug http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Slug - if you are really planning to change your name, it really has to shorten to 3 or 4 letters. Right now people call you slug. Gegner - geg American Sniper -AS Korrupt - Korr Hickboy - Hick Phunguy - Phun. I actually think Slug is original and is a keeper but if you dont like it.... You see some people changing their names to something new every 2 months. Then they come up to you and say - you remember me its "xxxx". They usually should have stuck to "xxxx".

and when i think nasty, slimy little creature, i think bob!

HickBoy

Ok, go grab a soda whilest you read my dissertation:
It all started (for me) back in about 1983/84. I was a yung lad, just finishing 5th grade. I was really into the apple //e and some friends and I where totally into trading our apple games (before anyone called it warez) with eachother. Well, one day one of us got his first modem. A really cool Hayes 300 baud that his parents bought him. So now, we all would goto his house and we would call BBS's around Los Angeles. In case you remember them, we would frequent "AppleHollics" "Glendale Private Library" and a few other biggies like "AppleOrchards".
Well, to access these BBS's you needed to setup a username... Now everyone had to come up with a really cool sounding username... So my friends came up with "The Byter" and "Sector". Me being the little skateboarding freak I was, I decided to take on the name "Thrasher". Which by todays standards would probably be some freaky Crackers name. Oh, and by this time Mom had bought me a 1200bd modem, so I was like "Mr. Cool" out of my computer geek friends. Now I would login as Thrasher all around town to every BBS I could find.
Well, being a geek like I was, you needed to upload files to get points so you could download files... Well, I didnt have the kind of l33t stuff these bbs's wanted, so I decided to make a second account on all of them so I could upload the same files twice since they didnt have file checkers at the time. So out came my second name "HaPPy CaMPeR!" Spelled exactly as written :-) So now I had two names for my BBSing...
Well as time went by and High School came around, I decided to start my own BBS. I started CoastLine File Exchange (A non warez) BBS here in LA. Since it was a non warez BBS I used my real name Steve for all info... Hey, I was even a member of FIDONET!
So now comes the 90's and I was getting tired of seeing my name everywhere, so I decided on a fake name again... I decided to use Steve Sobel! (I found em in the phonebook). I used that for all my BBSing and played BBS games under "Thrasher" since I thought "happy camper" was silly by then...
Now comes the Internet...
It's about 1991 and I started learning about the Internet and how to connect my BBS over to it...
Well, I started playing games online (Things like BBS Wars, TradeWars, Foodfight, etc...) Old BBS games, but now connected via ConcentricNet (Before it was a backbone).
I decided I needed a new name and I couldnt figure out what the hell to call myself!
After a few days of playing Wolfenstein3D back in 1993 or 1994 (I forget). I came up with the HickBoy name. I figured since I like BBQ food and my friends are always making fun of me cause I got this bright red neck from not wearing any sunscreen, HELL! Why not be a "HickBoy!" online. So I took up this personality of talking while I played my games, and yelling "YeeeeHawww!" everywhere I went. Well it drove people NUTS! They would say "Shut UP you FREAK!" and I would just yell more!
I really started using it when I played Duke Nukem3d against others, and then it really caught on when I started playing Quake (TeamFortress 1) with Lud, Geg, Lead, Sub, etc..
Most of them pictured me as this 45 year old Beerbelly Redneck who was a rascist pig. Well, I am sure others still do.. but they know the truth :-)
Anyway, I kept HickBoy for years and to this day I still use it, as I rarely see people with the same name... I had shortened it to "Hick" when I started playing Counter-Strike back in Beta 2 because the fonts on everyones screens where rounded and people thought my name was "ChickBoy". So "Hick" seemed a better name, and easier to type.
Anyway, there's how I got all my names...
I have a few other SECRET names that only a few special people know... And it's going to stay that way... ;-)
Shakesbeer
12-01-2000, 02:44 PM
Well I've had a few names too. The one which was has estabilished me with most of the quake players is Anacrime. I actually got the idea for the while kicking back with some guys from the mexican mafia. The ask my little click at the time (good 5 years ago) where we were from. We said, Anaheim, and he replied "orale', anacrime." So while thinking up a cool name for online crap I thought of that.
Now Shakesbeer came about waaaaaaaaay before anacrime. Back in, sheesh, 94 I think. When the web to me consisted of the prodigy bulliten boards. No once in a great while I'd get in some of hte threads about drinks (don't ask my age at the time http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/wink.gif ). Being stupid and young I thought it was be "cool" to use quotes from song envolving alcohol. So to keep with the theme, I thought of Shakesbeer. THe reason why I used that in cs was because how I said Anacrime had a rep behind it. Those of you who were in the q2 scene know that protecting that rep was a huge point of concern. So I thought I'd revive Shakesbeer during my I'am-a-newie-who-sucks period of CS. Before I knew it everyone know Shakesbeer and it was pointless to change names then. So here I am.

Well, my registered name is fairly obvious, in that it's my real name with a clan tag. This was actually my first real online gaming name, my experience with online gaming starting October last year, which is about when I started playing at fr3nsyc. More recently (basically after i returned from my summer holiday and started playing again) I've been going as Legion, which is from a Roger Zelazny book "My Name is Legion"
Yup, that's about it.
JBond
12-02-2000, 06:02 AM
Let's see... I remember it clearly, in the 5th grade when my Dad got his new spanking 133 I think it was...along with internet access from GNN (who later folded I think). I remember getting mIRC and I was like, "Ohhh a chat client" and from then on I've been using the same nickname.
I was really into James Bond back then, and "Goldeneye" was the obsession of me. I absolutely loved it. So I ended up with 'JBond' as my handle, and then went onto EFnetfor about two years straight before finding online video games, which never really took off due to a 28.8 modem and a 133 for the longest time.
But here I am with the same nick, even though it's getting old, I still like since most people wouldn't think of it. Heh, I still talk to some people that i met over IRC the very first time i logged about 6 years ago now...
...crazy!

I've made a post like this before in another forum, A.L.L. (http://www.lanparty.com/all) and the response was tremendous. It's nice to see all the history behind the names! http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
For me, it's one man. Samuel L. Jackson. Awww yeah. You know it. Feel the funk......
My first computer experience was with the old ass DOS games when I was about 8 years old. I remember playing some side scrolling Kung Fu game and King's Quest. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/tongue.gif
I came into the online community right around when Duke 3D came out. I was registered with some national online players thing where people would sign up with where they lived, e-mail addy, phone #, etc.
I remember using the register place only once. I e-mailed a guy in AZ one day and setup a game with him. We connected, but the funniest shit would happen with the guy's computer. We would connect, when suddenly his computer would spontaneouly reboot or his computer would just shut off. Fun!
I really got into playing heavily online when Red Alert came out. The game that I consider got me hooked on to computer games for good.
Other names I have used:
BoyG - Stood for boy genious.... Well, some people thought it stood for boy george... it was short lived
cYyGnUs.x1 - A black hole in outer space that would send off interstellar radio waves... nifty
Assimilator - Yeah, just lame...
P@steyMoFo - I think I like this one, and will probably keep it because of it's uniqueness, however I've been seeing another player on some servers called Pastey WhiteBoy... I urge you to make snide comments about his mother.
Been playing since. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/tongue.gif<br clear=all>

this doesnt have much to do with the names, but its really cool to see that most of you guys seriously date back in the history of computer games. for those of us that are younger (such as me) it is rare to find someone who played kqI or wing commander I/II or even a more recent one like wolf3d.
i mean how many people who are 18- would recognize the name Castle Wolfenstein (the NON 3d version) from like 1984 or whatever. its just damn COOL and ive been waiting most of my life to find you people. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hrm... i didnt really seriously get into games until about 94/95... when quake came out... i played duke 3d for a while but that didnt strike me as that interesting, but quake, god... quake changed my life... made me a complete computer nerd, i learned how to script in quake c (most people did but it was great i made some of the first pipe-bomb scripts in TF, also sniper zoom scripts and other misc stuff - RJ, medic conc jump, etc) anyways, for all of my gaming life i've used DemiGod, when i was in 8th grade and got into these games i was into a little bit of rave culture on the west coast and loved this DJ named 'Demigod' so i just picked that up and used it and it fit pretty well in TF cause i was one of the only HPB snipers that could snipe the fak outta most LPB snipers... i almost made it to the .10 (tf'ers you know what im talkin about, top 10 hpb snipers in tf) but i found halflife before i got from the candidate list to the .10 ...
before i got into tf, i used to go by some experimental names including the word sniper heh... i used to play rocket arena under my regular name as well...
after being a TF vet for a while it was getting annoying seeing everyone everywhere and having to chat with them so i created the name "P0s31d0n" and would go around under that, no longer tho, nothing to hide, and i dont mind people saying hey when i recognize them, and i only play on fr3nsycs...
anyways those of u who played TF on the LoL server (Hick for one i know) might recognize me... i used to be in clan [MiB] (before the movie came out and suddenly there were 14 [MiB]s and we disbanded ... and then i was in >DC< but the merging of CoC and CD didnt go so well so we disbanded, however we're still pretty good friends... i think there was a clan inbetween mib and DC but it was pretty insignificant...
and anyways i started CS just being "DemiGod" i started from a clean slate, but i joined =FLW= (foot long wankers, heh created by a 15 year old) then that disbanded, and then my friends started a semi-clan (more of an id tag) -=[RAN]=- (japanese for chaos) based on a custom honda team we are half-assedly claiming to be...
and then theres BH which you folks of course know... i just loved playin with clark and rop3r and so they let me wear the tag, although i dont see them that often =(
and the =FLW= is on my tag now for what reason: i've been too lazy to remove it from my config and FLW was re-created and wanted me to wear it for a week for some reason so i said sure... heh havnt talked to them in a month... maybe i'll go take FLW off my name now... so yup thats my name/tag story heh =)
not as exciting as some of yours but hey its mine, no one else can claim to have had demigod since the very beginning of quake (that plays now at least)...

I would be interested to see where the names Phunguy, American Sniper, Mr Roper, Korrupt and Sub came from - as well as the others we are missing.....
I have had a few names since I started playing online games. My first real internet experience was Yahoo Chat rooms fighting with all the Don Juans saying "Any Females wanna chat?" I always ended up in sports forums or movie trivia forums. (met the best girls in rooms other than the "Do me online baby!!" rooms. =] When I started online, I frequented a reggae music chat room and used the name "Jah" and quoted reggae lyrics for people wanted to get the lyrics for artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, etc. Then I went over to a friends house and met his roommate while he was playing a computer video game called Quake TF. I thought "what a loser, zoning out on a video game" Little did I know what was in store. He had me sit down and play a game, name was Jah (Lud says he remembers me playing by that name), and I played pyro. I had so much fun setting people on fire and throwing mirvs it was outrageous. Well he couldn't get my ass out of his chair for two days. HAH!! I immediatley went out and got a P2 350 with 128 ram and two monster 2 cards SLI and became a junky. After playing a while I decided to lose my newbie name and go with another. So I chose Sublime after the San Diego band. Well, shortly, after that, Mastadon (Mast) introduced me to competetive online gaming and clans. So i tried out for Cerberus (Geg beat up on me for a while) and got in. I even had switched to FC for a game or two. (Goose gave me plenty of hell at Hick's lan hehe). Anyways, The rest was nothing but endless fun. Man those were some fun days.
I have also gone by other names, Overlord, Rabib Turkey (binding Gobble Gobble!!!! for taunt) When playing at my friends house (mini lan) we would go by the names Flotsam and Jetsam. The only other name I ever had was in TFC i played as Unnamed or Player. NOw I have a whole new set of names for Asheron's Call.

Hmmm..jazzy...i know on aol people added the 0r to the names when they were crack0rs. heh...thats how i got one of my aol names. Butuh...is that where you got yours from?
Oh...and most people know the story behind my name. My speakers wouldnt work right with CS so I had to goto Systems and enable Virtual Memory. For some reason doing this on my old comp made me run faster (to the point where i could crouch+walk faster than others ran) haha. I remember on iraq i could get from 1 base to the other in 5 seconds or less. And yosh-E came from my friends. My name is josh and my friend goes to school with lots of mexicans so she started callin me yosh..and i just made it yoshi...but yosh-E looks better i think
