hey everyone! Ok here's my question. Since last Christmas, I was seriously into playing Counter-strike. I wouldn't play on the weekdays, but on the weekends I played for a while. Last summer I spent a lot of time as well playing counter-strike. Now don't get me wrong, I have a life. I go to movies, party, etc., but I liked to play counter-strike a lot. Well ever since early in September, our computer was significantly slower than normal. It would take atleast a minute to load ICQ, AOL (I don't use AOL as my isp, just for email purposes), and my scanner wouldn't scan. So my dad and I decided to format our hard drive last week, and everything seems to be running great. Now when I came to the computer with my Half-life CD, my dad said that I couldn't install Half-life because my playing is what caused the computer to function so slowly. My question is, is this possible? I have a Dell Dimension P2 XPS R400. Please help!

Damn you lead...you stated my entire life in that post. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif I'd tend to agree with lead here oddjob...Do weekly maintenance on your PC. I do mine every day...but that's too much for most peeps. I on the other hand don't have much of a life. If I didn't have a computer....I'd shoot myself. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif But, the truth is if you don't want to use the windows defragger (which personally I think sucks) I recommend Norton's...It costs some money but, I do think it's worth it. And like Lead said, "Don't allow too many proggies too run at once!" ask Rune I had to fix his registry...grrr...anyway, I think lead has said the most of it...AND TELL YOUR DAD "DER!!!!!!" for me. http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif

OJ, I have the exact computer you have. One thing I did was go to more memory, 192.

When mine did the 'big slow down' just like yours, I purchased Ontrack's System Suite 2000 and made use of: the registry cleaner/defragger, and smart defrag.

The registry cleaner/fixer found 379 problems in the registry. Broken links, mulitple redundant files, goofed up .dll's... the list was seemingly endless.

Once that was done, I ran the defrag - that took quite a while - and then ran the startup utility, and turned off many of the behind the scenes resource hogs that run all the time.

I noted about a 50% increase in apparent overall speed. Bootup took half as long and shut down became wicked fast.

I chose Ontrack over Norton because: 1) it was cheaper 2)it has half the footprint that norton or any of the others do 3)it's utility integration within the suite is much tighter and better written than the others. No matter what utility(s) you choose, make sure you use it on a regular basis.

Talk to daddy about adding a faster 7200 rpm hdd to the system. Increase your usable space and speed things a bit, or do what I intend and just upgrade to a later faster computer. Heck the 1 gig intels and athalons are getting cheaper almost by the week.

One other thing... I wouldn't put AOhell on my comp for anything.... that proggy sux all day long.

Good luck<br clear=all>
