Hey guys, I need a little critiquing on this editorial that I want to send to my local newspaper. Please by all means let me know what you think, all comments good/bad welcome. This isn't for school or anything, I just wanted to voice my opinion. So read on!
---------------------------------------------
As our town grows and expands, I believe that certain values should remain in our schools. Some teachers from all schools in the AISD are being very hippocritical when it comes to their policies on work turned in. Many times work has been turned in but it takes an exuberant amount of time for it to get back to the students. The student goes through the same stresses of daily life as a teacher, but they are expected to turn in all work on time (if it is late then it recieves an automatic 50), however teachers are somehow exempt from this rule. Saying to your class that you couldn't finish grading a quiz becuase you went to a movie when some friends stopped over is monstrously unjust. Both students and teachers make mistakes, so let's acknowledge them without penalty and not let habitual tardiness by anyone become accepted.
---------------------------------------------
So what do ya think? By the way some sidenotes: I live in Austin, and the AISD is the Austin Independant School District.
Like I said before all comments are welcome, and don't hold back on the flames. Thanks you guys http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ok first point:
You spelt hypocritical wrong.
2nd Point:
Teachers should be cut some slack when it comes to grading assignments. Are these grades really in that high of demand that they must be returned so promptly?
Secondly, teachers are highly underpaid as many people know for what their job demands.
"Knowledge is Power." A famous quote right?
Strange how teachers give this out for free.
So, I don't exactly agree in all points of your agreement oddish on a few points.
We as students are expected to complete our work so we can learn, succeed, and become prepared for our future lives.
Teachers don't receive the respect they deserve. So, cut them a little slack and give them some more respect for the job that they do.

2 small little thingies. first one to oj: ummmm are you aware of how little teachers are paid? the guy who picks up the trash from your house is paid more than he/she is. second thing is to leady: argh leady german vanilla ice cream is the best. where else in the world can you go and pay 1DM (.50 cents for your americans) for 3 scopes of fresh ice cream in a waffle cone? and these ice cream stands are on every corner, i mean every single friggin corner.

about this...
uhm teachers get _paid_ to teach you things besides what is on the lesson agenda...
they teach you responsibility.. turning things in on time is a responsibility, its to teach you that its not a good thing to do... now in the case of grading and having them turn it back to you on a given time... imagine this: you have 124 2 page essays in front of you... thats 195 pages (take account for the lazy procrastinators) so you're reading a redundant novel and you're getting payed SHIT to do it! and its all due in ... a week... oh ya and you have to wright comprehensive remarks on each one...
thats a LOT of shit dude... teachers deserve more of a leeway on due dates than anyone else i know.. except maybe me (heh)
and uhm what else.. oh yea... i dont like the way you ended it... no one should have strict due dates... be radical man... dont try to strengthen the idea of a block-scheduled society! uhm what else.... i like cookies and cream ice cream http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/smile.gif

I suspect that the word you want is 'exorbitant' not 'exuberant'.

Hate to say it Bro,
But, get used to unfair in life. Because a teacher has some unexpected guests, or a bad sinus infection, or whatever.... you are the student, dicated by law to be either in skool, or in violation. You are expected to follow the skool board mandated rules of conduct and teacher guidlines that they have agreed upon. I agree there is mucho unfairness in the world, and we should always look for ways to correct and reform it -- however, I would do nothing but write these kind of letters 24/7 if I let it get to me.
That said, I am not at ALL dissing you for trying to change something that you consider wrong. I wish you luck and godspeed.
I would suggest a milder first effort, followed by gradually stronger verbage, if the problem does not become corrected. Also, I would insure that you are not casting stones if all your ducks are not in order... IE: if you don't have great grades, and are not in any trouble at skool - then chances are that you will be heard with a greater degree of attention and respect.
Another idea: involve the student association and pta in this effort, if warrented. Poll your peers and discover if there is a larger support pool for your opinion - also poll parents to see if they would support something like this... and insure that if you do aquire their support -- they are parents who are activly involved in their students lives... that they attend parent night, know what color text books the kids bring home, what the last test or quiz involved, etc etc.
The last thing that educators want to hear is: Johnny got a bad grade you creep, why?
Most parents have no clue what their kids are doing or learning... if anything.
In other words: make sure that this isn't just a complaint that has no basis for reason... I'm sure it does, but you will be dealing with a huge entrenched Bureaucracy that isn't going to be easily moved or convinced. Invovling the media is probably the best thing you can do to foster attention and possible movement towards due dilligence in discovring what can be done.
good luck, OJ !!
Teachers had to go through High school, College - and sometimes go back to get a Masters. Thats quite a bit of homework turned in on their own. Don't get your panties all in a bunch just because you didn't get your book report back the next day after you wrote it. These people deserve to have a life too. Teaching is already an average of 14 hours a day, one of the least paid professions, a position of little respect.

I don't think they should have a due date to grade assignments because it would be like you doing 124 pages worth of homework everynight. I also agree that teachers are very under paid. I also think that some slack should be given to them, for they have already accomplished school turning all their assignments in on a certain due date. Maybe if you got like a petition of people saying they would like this done you would have a better chance.

Great guys! I'm greatly impressed at the responses to my post. Everyone of you guys (except for Rune of course http://www.fr3nsyc.net/ubb/biggrin.gif) are definately intelligent on this issue and your points are valid. I'm getting swamped in schoolwork this week...so in a couple days I'll be able to voice my opinion again against some of your comments. Until then keep the posts comin!

Ummm... Demi.. not sure what you were going on about there, with the mini-spelling rant and all, but I'm fairly certain that Jason wasn't refering to your spelling/grammar... He was speaking to OJ. Chill man..... you didn't even use that word.
... and yes Jason, I agree.

Ok... You do the math...
Teacher in High School as 5 classes per day.
Each class has 30 students.
Teacher gives a quiz on Monday to his classes.
He now has 150 quizes to grade.
Same teacher assigns a book report on Wednesday...
It's due the following Wednesday...
Now each student turns in 2-5 pages...
Teacher now has 5-600 pages to read...
Now you want teacher to give 'YOUR' paper some respect and give it a good read... Rather than just SKIM thru it...
Oh.. and everyone else covered the basis about how much they get paid for this..etc...
